1997 Biltmore Estate Chateau Reserve Johanisberg Riesling

A little past it's prime, this was still a great wine just this evening (14 June, 2004.)  Biltmore is another sentimental favorite, mostly due to the fond memories I have of the estate that go back to the first family vacation that I can recall, around age 3 or 4.   The most vivid recollection I have of that first trip was standing next to the fountains overlooking the front lawn with my father immersing our wrists in the cool water on a hot summer day.  When my children became old enough to attend summer camp in the NC mountains we returned on a regular basis.  Now my wife and I try to return every fall to see the Christmas decorations.  If you haven't paid a visit to the largest private residence in the United States, I highly recommend it.

Imminently approachable, hints of apple and maybe some pear with a floral aroma.   Not too much on the finish, but clean and pleasant without any surprises.  Light, golden color, good body and a silky feel.  Not the wine I recall from our initial tasting in 1998, next time this certainly won't last more than a year or so in the rack, but still pleasant and enjoyable.  6/10
